Europe boosts the renewables

This year, renewable energy sources such as, the wind and the sun, overtook fossil fuels (according to a new report published on Wednesday). "In the first half of 2020, renewables (wind, solar, hydro and bioenergy) generated 40% of the EU-27's electricity, whereas fossil fuels generated 34%,". Ember stated that the amount of electricity generated by renewables in the EU's 27 member states rose by 11% in the period from January to June. [...] Wind and solar alone reached a record of 21% of Europe's total electricity generation, and reached even higher penetration in Denmark (64 percent), Ireland (49%) and Germany (42%), the study said. Fossil fuels, on the other hand, fell by 18 percent, squeezed both by rising renewable generation and a seven-percent fall in electricity demand due to the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, the EU-27 power sector's emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) fell by about 23%, according to Ember. "This ...

As COVID-19 hits the fossil fuel industry, a new report shows that renewable energy is more cost-effective than ever – providing an opportunity to prioritize clean energy in economic recovery packages and bring the world closer to meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement. [...] “The chorus of voices calling on governments to use their COVID-19 recovery packages to create sustainable economies is growing,” said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP. “This research shows that renewable energy is one of the smartest, most cost-effective investments they can make in these packages.” Investing in renewables to fight adevrsities “If governments take advantage of the ever-falling price tag of renewables to put clean energy at the heart of COVID-19 economic recovery, they can take a big step towards a healthy natural world, which is the best insurance policy against global pandemics,” Andersen said. Renewable energy has been eating away at fossil fuels’ dominant shar...

Clean Air, Clear Skies and Fresh Megawatts Cause Europe’s Solar Records to Tumble

A bright spot in the coronavirus gloom: Spain, Germany and the U.K. have all broken solar generation records this spring.   Solar power generation records have been set in three of Europe’s largest markets, with cleaner air as a result of the coronavirus pandemic a contributing factor. Reduced air pollution from the lockdown has contributed to new records in Germany and the U.K., while Spain’s bumper year of installations in 2019 is going through its first springtime boost. Records are common at this time of year as panels installed in the previous autumn and winter make their first meaningful contribution to the grid. This time around, however, the effect is more pronounced. With traffic off the roads, planes out the skies and many industries closed, some sources of air pollution have fallen drastically. The British government has detected a 25 percent decline in nitrogen dioxide levels, but the drop is thought to be even more pronounced, up to half, in the m...
